If you find that you did not report some income, you claimed deductions or credits you should not have claimed, you failed to claim some deductions or credits you are entitled to, or you should have used a different filing status, you should file an amended tax return. Generally, an amended tax return must be received by the IRS within 3 years from the date you filed your original return or within 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is LATER. A return filed early is considered filed on the due date. An amended tax return based on a bad debt or worthless security generally must be received by the IRS within 7 years after the due date of the return for the tax year in which the debt or security became worthless. Contact us for more information on amending a tax return.
